Please Carry on...

We shifted to a new city when I was in the final year of college. Needless to say, I had to undergo the painful process of haggling around with the new university to approve me as a student and had to write extra exams in subjects that I studied till 12th to qualify as THEIR student. The fact that the teachers for that subject could not speak the language which they teach but wanted to guide me for that exam is altogether different. Finally, I got admission to a college and started attending classes.

I could manage to find friends but I did not let them know my secret..that I understand the local language. Once I overheard some girls sitting behind talking about me in the local language. I just did not bother about it and carried on with my work. The conversation heated up in a while and one girl said "Ssshhh, don't talk much about her (me), she might understand what we are saying" But her friend just replied loudly " What is she going to understand, as if she is born and brought up here ??" and some other blah blah. I was waiting for such a lovely chance. So I pounced upon this chance to smile back at her and say in the politest tone possible in the local language "Please carry on, it's okay you guys are talking about me, no problems. I am enjoying it too."

Imagine how she would have looked after I said this. I had to control my laughter with great difficulty. After this incident, madam would always exchange greetings whenever she sees me and talk in the politest tone possible!
(P.S: The name of the city is deliberately not mentioned)
